• The four skills-based units

  Each skills-based unit combines an expert presentation focusing on practical tips and advice plus either a workshop or discussion group to share experiences and learn potential solutions from your peers.

  Unit A - Data: How to get it and how to use it

  Expert learning Practical advice on:

  • What financial and activity data do you need and how can you ensure you get it?
  • DIY data sources and the 'good enough data' principle
  • Which data for which purpose?
  • Avoiding data overload
  • Tariffs update, including HRG4
  • Data validation: how to check it and when to challenge it
  • How to start collating your own data at PBC group or practice level
  • Learning points from best-practice case studies

  Group workshops Delegates will work through real examples of data problems including:

  • Data to support a service redesign business case
  • Validating and challenging acute trust data
  • Using public health data to identify population level health priorities
  • Using data to identify the potential to tackle a demand management issue or make an efficiency saving

  Unit B - Key PBC stumbling blocks and how to overcome them

  Expert learning Top tips on:

  • Improving your relationship with your PCT: where does the problem lie and how can you tackle it?
  • The great conflict of interest myth and how to debunk it
  • Your rights as a practice-based commissioner and how to assert them
  • Clinical leadership gaps and how to fill them
  • The 'elephant in the room' syndrome and how to avoid it...analysing what's really holding up progress in your area
  • Learning points from best-practice case studies

  Discussion groups Practice-based commissioners and PCT commissioning leads will have the opportunity to identify the barriers that are holding up PBC and hammer out the key action points to get progress back on track in their own area

  Unit C - Negotiating and influencing skills to drive forward PBC success

  Expert learning How-to advice on:

  • Engaging, influencing and motivating all your PBC stakeholders (while staying popular with colleagues)
  • Effective negotiation skills (with your PCT, your PBC group colleagues, consortium GPs and territorial secondary care clinicians)
  • Driving through culture change
  • Tips for resolving conflicts
  • Engaging apathetic practices in PBC... the importance of leadership
  • Performance management...bringing wayward practices back into the fold
  • Learning points from best-practice case studies

  Group workships Delegates will work through typical scenarios which challenge the business and people skills of practice-based commissioners. Each group will come up with a plan of action setting out the pros and cons of the various options available to effect change.

  Unit D - Making a success of your service redesign

  Expert learning Top tips on:

  • Identifying the win-win opportunities and touching the right PCT buttons
  • Unbundling tariffs; the possibilities
  • Being clear about your goals; health outcomes/patient satisfaction/health inequalities/cost saving/demand management/filling provision gaps
  • Involving patients
  • Financial and resource projections; set-up costs, staff requirements, premises and so on
  • Clinical governance
  • Setting rigorous and measurable evaluation targets from the outset...and how will you monitor them?
  • Procurement options; AWP vs competitive tender vs LES and so on
  • Extending your PBC group into the provider role

  Group workshops Delegates can either bring their own PBC group's service redesign case with them to develop and seek input from tutors and peers or they can opt to critique hypothetical service redesign business cases.

  Simply download the document and enter the password given to you at the event when prompted to open the document. Please note, this is a large file and may take a while to download.

All tickets will be delivered by TEVA UK Limited but healthcare professionals are not under any obligation to see a representative.
